What Bingo Is
Bingo is a number draw game. Each player holds a ticket printed with numbers, a caller (or a random number generator online) draws balls one at a time, and you mark any number that matches your ticket. The bingo rules are the same idea everywhere; what changes is the ticket and the winning patterns. In India the 90 ball version is usually called tambola or housie. Online arcade games apps mostly mark numbers for you automatically.
The two main formats
- 75 ball bingo: a 5 by 5 card with the letters B, I, N, G, O over the columns and a free space in the middle. Patterns can be a line, four corners, letters or a full card.
- 90 ball bingo (tambola): a ticket of 3 rows and 9 columns with 15 numbers, five on each row. Prizes go to one line, two lines and a full house, and tambola adds claims like early five and four corners.
Bingo Rules Step by Step
- Buy tickets. Each ticket costs the same and has a different set of numbers. More tickets mean more chances, and a bigger spend.
- The draw starts. Numbers are drawn one at a time at random and shown on screen.
- Mark your numbers. Mark every drawn number that appears on any of your tickets. Most apps do this for you.
- Claim the pattern. When a ticket completes a prize pattern, you claim it. In live games you shout or press the claim button; online the system often detects it.
- Check. The claim is checked against the numbers drawn. A valid claim wins that prize. A false claim (a "bogey") can cancel the ticket in tambola.
- Continue. The game carries on until the full house, the last and usually largest prize, is won.
How prizes are split
The prize pool for each pattern is set before the game. If two players complete the same pattern on the same number, the prize is usually shared. Which patterns are offered and how the pool is divided are shown in the game.
A Worked Tambola Example
Your 90 ball ticket reads:
| Row | Numbers |
|---|---|
| Top | 4, 21, 37, 52, 80 |
| Middle | 9, 18, 44, 63, 75 |
| Bottom | 12, 29, 56, 68, 90 |
- The first eight numbers drawn are 21, 63, 4, 33, 9, 52, 71, 18. You mark 21, 63, 4, 9 and then 52. That is five numbers on the sixth ball, so you claim early five before anyone else gets there. The 18 is marked too.
- Next comes 37, then 80. Your top row (4, 21, 37, 52, 80) is complete. You claim the top line.
- A few draws later 44 and 75 come. Your middle row is complete, so you now have two lines.
- For the full house you need all of the bottom row: 12, 29, 56, 68, 90. If another player completes their whole ticket first, the full house goes to them, and your earlier claims still stand.
Is Bingo Skill or Chance?
Bingo is a game of chance. The draw is random, and once you hold a ticket there is no decision that changes which numbers come out. The only choices are how many tickets to buy and which games to join. Buying more tickets raises your chances in that game and raises what you spend by the same amount. Nobody can predict a draw, so ignore anyone selling a "system".
Common Bingo Mistakes
- Buying a stack of tickets for one game without adding up the total cost.
- Missing a claim in a manual game because you looked away.
- Making a false claim in tambola and losing the ticket.
- Assuming every game uses the same patterns. Read the prize list first.
- Joining back to back games without a break. The rounds are fast and the spend adds up.
