What Teen Patti Is
Teen patti ("three cards") is the Indian cousin of three card brag and poker. It uses one 52 card deck and usually 3 to 6 players at a table. There is no drawing or discarding. You get three cards, you bet or fold, and the best hand left at the end takes the pot. These teen patti rules cover the classic version that most card apps and arcade games lobbies use. Variants like Muflis (lowest hand wins) or AK47 (those ranks are wild) change one rule and are labelled in the game.
Teen Patti Hand Ranking
From highest to lowest:
- Trail (trio): three cards of the same rank. Three aces is the best hand in the game.
- Pure sequence: three consecutive cards of the same suit, such as 7, 8, 9 of spades.
- Sequence (run): three consecutive cards in mixed suits.
- Colour: three cards of the same suit, not in order.
- Pair: two cards of the same rank.
- High card: none of the above; the highest card decides.
A, K, Q is the top sequence. Many tables also rank A, 2, 3 as the second best sequence, but this is one of the details that varies, so check the hand chart shown on screen in the game.
Teen Patti Rules for a Round
- Boot. Every player puts a fixed starting amount (the boot) into the pot.
- Deal. Each player gets three cards face down.
- Blind or seen. You can play blind, without looking, or look at your cards and play seen. Once you look, you are seen for the rest of the hand.
- Betting. Play goes round the table. A blind player bets at least the current stake. A seen player bets at least twice the current stake. Each player can call (chaal), raise within the table limit, or pack (fold).
- Side show. A seen player can ask the previous seen player to compare cards privately. If accepted, the weaker hand must fold.
- Show. When only two players are left, either can ask for a show by paying the stake. Both hands are revealed and the better one wins the pot.
Some tables also end a hand when the pot reaches a set limit. Stake limits, pot limits and whether side show is allowed are part of the table rules shown inside the game.
A Worked Teen Patti Hand
Four players, boot of 1 point each, so the pot starts at 4 points. Asha and Ravi stay blind. Karan and Meena look.
- Asha (blind) bets 1 point. The current stake is 1.
- Karan (seen) holds K, K, 4. He must bet at least 2 points and he calls with 2.
- Ravi (blind) bets 1 point.
- Meena (seen) holds 3, 7, J in mixed suits. That is only high card, so she packs.
- Asha decides to look. She has 9, 10, J of hearts, a pure sequence. Now seen, she raises to 4 points.
- Karan calls with 4. Ravi, still blind, packs.
- Two players are left. Karan pays for a show. Asha's pure sequence beats Karan's pair of kings and she takes the pot.
Karan's pair was a good hand. It still lost to a hand two places higher, which is how most big pots are lost.
Skill or Chance in Teen Patti
The cards are random, and with only three of them there is no way to improve a hand. Skill shows up in betting: when to stay blind, when to fold a weak hand, when to ask for a side show, and how much to risk. A disciplined player loses less over time, but luck carries a single hand far more than in rummy. Treat it as a game where any one hand can go either way.
Common Teen Patti Mistakes
- Mixing up colour and sequence. A sequence beats a colour.
- Calling a show with a high card hand because the pot got big.
- Staying blind too long to save on stake, then chasing.
- Not checking how the table ranks A, 2, 3 before relying on it.
- Raising to the limit every round. It empties a balance fast.
